The everyday job of being a parent or teacher can be tough. It requires you to make dozens of decisions, some of which are more challenging than others. You’re often required to think on your feet, and sometimes, you have to put your foot down. As a parent or teacher, you need to know when to be firm, and when to be more relaxed; when to be flexible, and when to be decisive. In all your dealings with children, it is so important to be firm, fair and consistent, and understand the art of compromise.
Sometimes adults are too accommodating and children walk all over them; or too rigid and uncompromising which does not help with interpersonal relationships or behaviour management! Being able to strike a balance between not-firm-enough and too-firm is a skill, just as being fair and consistent are skills.
Today’s video will look at how and when to negotiate and compromise, the importance of teaching children to negotiate, and how to ensure when you say ‘no’ children understand you mean it!

Parenting and teaching can be tough. Sometimes we’re faced with angry or aggressive behaviours. At those times when children are in a heightened state of emotion, we need to know what to do, and what not to do. Formulating a contingency plan of what steps to take when faced with highly-emotional behaviour will set you and your child up for more behaviour management success than if you simply react in the moment without pre-thought.
